Health

GMC in Sindh are exposed to high temperatures for most of the year. We make our employees aware of the risks of high exposure to extreme temperatures that may result in heat-related health problems like dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke. To mitigate against this risk, we provide air-conditioned containers, encourage cool water intake, and wearing of appropriate head covering.

Most of PEL’s operational area is a habitat for snakes, scorpions, mosquitoes, and other potentially dangerous wildlife. We make sure that all our personnel adheres to a strict set of rules, to maximize safety and minimize the risk of harm. These rules include: getting a vaccination, avoiding skin exposure, and exposure to danger-prone areas. Mosquito sprays are carried out at all camp areas. Doctors, ambulances, and first aid kits of the highest quality are available round the clock to cater to any emergency. At least one medical doctor (MBBS qualified) is carried on the payroll of PEL for periodic visits to our installations

Safety

Our workers at GMC have risk exposure like H2S and CO2. To protect against this, separators and laminators are installed where necessary. Monitoring sites for the presence of toxic gases is key to safety. We also allocate Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) to each employee to protect themselves.

We are extremely concerned about fire safety at GMC. We have installed Updated Fire Alarm systems, Automatic Fire Extinguishers, Fire Blankets, and Fire hose reels at all GMC. A permit to work system (PTW) is strictly followed at all our sites. After checking the expertise level of workers PTW is issued from CCR and is closed after completion of the job. These PTWs include Cold work, Hot work, Electrical Isolation, Digging / Excavation, and Radiography permits. We impart general safety awareness training to newly inducted employees through toolbox talks.

A toolbox talk and general lectures pertaining to health, safety, and environmental issues are carried out in-house periodically. In addition to the above, we also encourage our employees to attend safety courses at institutions like the National Institute of Fire Technology (N.I.F.T), which offers different fire safety courses from time to time.

Security

We have appointed Flash Security (Subsidiary of Shahzad Groups of Companies) services to secure our fields, production facilities, and staff to the greatest extent possible. Flash Security escorts the staff, while they are visiting the fields for monitoring and evaluation. Security is also deployed at different posts (Watch Towers) and around the periphery of production facilities.

We also coordinate with local police and paramilitary force like Rangers at times of need, for instance, security during the spud-in ceremonies, visits of foreign petroleum professionals, and adverse law and order situations. With sound corporate ethics and by maintaining interaction with the provincial government functionaries, law enforcing agencies willingly help us in times of crises.

Environment

To preserve the environment, toxic gases like CO2, H2S, and CO are only released from a processing plant after due processing. Flare stacks are installed at heights of over 5 feet and are ignited automatically. These toxic gases are being burnt at a 5 feet height after being passed through a flare stack to prevent environmental pollution at the plant site and nearby areas. Previously the flare was ignited manually with extreme difficulty which was unsafe.

To adopt a safe method, an auto-ignition system was proposed and installed. An auto-ignition system helps to mitigate environmental pollution by the continuous burning of gases being flared. Similarly, gas emissions/exhaust gases due to the burning of natural gas in MDEA and TEG re-boilers and powerhouses, are also released to the atmosphere at industrial standard height after they are passed through their stacks.
